Neuralink, a company at the forefront of brain–computer interface (BCI) technology, recently released a video on its YouTube channel showcasing new robotic tools that it plans to use during the implantation procedure. According to the video, these robotic systems would be used to insert the implant’s electrode threads into the patient’s brain after a surgeon removes a portion of the skull. The announcement comes alongside Neuralink’s milestone of reaching more than 20 clinical trial participants across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
While this development may be presented as a step toward transparency, public engagement, or attracting investment, it also raises important questions about transparency and accountability. As robotic systems assume a greater role in the implantation process, responsibilities traditionally carried out by human surgeons are increasingly delegated to proprietary technology. Without meaningful disclosure regarding how these systems operate, are validated, and are monitored for safety, this shift may ultimately represent a move toward less transparency rather than more.
