While Elon Musk’s Neurallink has been making the headlines, the world’s largest venture investment company has been funding and investing in brain-Computer interfaces since the late 1990’s, when their first clinical trials began. On their website, they espouse that they’ve been validated in 2000 published studies and 165 of those in peer-reviewed journals. Yet, there seems to be a lack of clarity in this statement, as there are no links to any of the studies on the website. Without direct access to the underlying research, patients and members of the public may find it difficult to independently evaluate the scope, quality, and relevance of the evidence being cited. Greater transparency regarding the studies supporting safety and efficacy claims are needed to help promote informed decision-making and public confidence.
